The government of president William Ruto has suspended all local and foreign travel of all state departments to cut spending.

The memo, which was signed by the Ministry of Treasury’s Principal Secretary Dr Julius Muia, directed the departments to suspend all new trainings as well as approvals of purchase of office furniture, fittings, computers and ICT materials.

This directive states that no state department will be allowed to take their staff outside the country using the public money as it has been a norm as one way of cutting the spending by the state.

Previously, all the state departments from various ministries have been travelling outside the country to oversee how other similar departments from developed countries are doing their work.

All Ministries have also been directed to hold their meetings and taskforce engagements in their boardrooms instead of hiring expensive hotel facilities for the purpose.

Ruto has been keen on cutting the goverment expenses where upon taking over the presidency, he ordered the cutting of budget by over 300 billion.

The Kenyan budget has recently crossed Ksh3 trillion putting pressure on the taxpayer to shoulder the Government spending

According to him, the goverment is spending more than the revenue they are collecting.

The letter further directed them to limit requisition for lunches and suspend approvals for workshop and retreats. Retreats may only be permissible in exceptional circumstances.

The Ministry of Treasury further noted that it had already complied with the directive and requested all Ministries to comply.

The budget cuts have targeted various items such as local and foreign training, office and general supplies, hospitality supplies and services, local and foreign travel, purchase of office furniture, purchase of office equipment and various projects that have low absorption rates and/or challenges of implementation,” read the statement in part.

All directors as well as heads of units among others challenged all departments to revise their budgets in an effort to slow down Government’s spending
